Ugly Bloggers Don't Exist

In our era of hyperactive social media posters, your physical appearance has never been so important. It’s sad to say that the digital revolution has not only brought the ability for bloggers to engage with readers all over the world, it has also increased the risk of low self-esteem for the younger generations. Indeed, from the moment selfies have become popular, more and more young people are exposed to photos of celebrities and photoshopped images on their preferred social media platforms. As a result, there is a digital expectation of beauty. It’s not that you can’t become a blogger if you don’t meet these criteria, but it’s a lot more difficult to promote your work if your appearance is not selfie-worthy. Thankfully, the criteria of beauty, nowadays, have evolved and we’re far from the idyllic image of the Greek beauty that used to shape the Renaissance art. Beauty has gained a different meaning, and as a result, it shapes your blog.

You’re your own professional brand

Ultimately, as a blogger, you become your own brand. Consequently, you need to use your appearance as part of your promotional message. After all, there is no blog without a blogger’s profile. Thankfully, beauty bloggers have a lot of helpful advice to share about how to become the face of your blog. Indeed, as blogging is an expression of self, your readers expect to see the real you in your photos. What this means is that they want to recognise you as the person who creates the posts they read. So be natural, but at the same time take several shots until you get the right one. Additionally, you need to ensure that you’ve got all the gear and props you need to take good pictures. Your brand needs to look professional.

Can your message handle your natural beauty?

Each blogger has a mission. Are you a stay-at-home mommy who runs her own business? Then you may not want to choose decors that are too relaxed, as readers expect you to look professional. Are you a health-conscious fitness advocate? It’s fair to say even if you’re healthy, your readers will expect to see someone who can serve as an inspiration to get fit, so it might be helpful to consider a cheap liposuction surgery to get rid of the stubborn fat, for instance. Does it mean you have to change who you are? No, but your visuals need to match the expectations of your audience group if you want your blog to grow.

Do you have to be beautiful to blog?

Digital users are used to selfies from social media influencers from all over the world. In the eye of a Millennial, beauty has no shape, colour, or gender. Instead, it perpetuates the digital expectations of an audience group. Namely,  you can’t blog successfully if you don’t know how to take a good selfie – aka understanding the rules of posing, the tools you use, and the message you convey. As a blogger, what makes you beautiful is showing you care about choosing the best tech, lighting, care products and pose to support your content.

Digital has transformed the idea of beauty and made it a tool for blogger’s promotion. It’s all about your selfie skills and keeping your message homogeneous.
