WordPress.org vs Blogger: Which is Better?

Are you thinking about starting a blog but aren’t sure which platform is the best option? There are two very popular blogging platforms to start your blog on. WordPress.org and Blogger are two of the more traditional options for the beginner blogger.

Today I’ll dive into the topic of both platforms to help you weigh the pros and cons of each option.

About WordPress.org

WordPress is open-source software that you can download and use for free.

For this, you will need to buy a hosting plan ( I personally recommend Lyrical Host [affiliate]) and a domain to start a blog on WordPress.org. You will then need to install WordPress.org within your hosting account, and while it sounds complicated, it’s pretty simple. Most hosting plans have a simple click and install option for WordPress.org blogs.

About Blogger

Bloggers is a free blogging platform that’s owned by Google.

This platform is free and doesn’t require a hosting account or domain purchase. Though you can purchase a domain for use with your Blogger blog, it’s not a requirement.

If you don’t buy a domain, you’ll get a .blogspot type of domain for your blog, which is completely free.

WordPress.org vs Blogger Ease of Use

WordPress.org set up doesn’t require advance knowledge of coding, or any coding experience at all. You will need to know how to point and click while following the instructions to install WordPress.org and use your domain for your blog.

Once installed you can easily select a free WordPress.org theme or buy one online. You’ll install the theme and have it all customised within a simple click and preview setting.

Blogger is easily set up with a Google account. You do need to have a valid Google account to create your first Blogger blog, so make sure you sign up for a Google account.

If you already use Gmail for your email account, then you are already set. Simply opt to “create a blog” when logged in at Blogger.com and you’ll easily pick a theme and name for your blog. This process is super simple and completely free.

Blog Ownership

Finally when it comes to WordPress.org vs Blogger one of the biggest concerns you might have is who owns your blog.

With a WordPress.org blog, you are in complete control and ownership of your blog. Although you do need to make sure things are 100% legit and legal. Hosts can, if you are breaking the law, pull your website. This is of course, rare and only done on occasion in exceptional situations.

With a Blogger blog, you do have Google hanging over your head a little (this is how I felt in the end). After all, they own the platform and have at times shut peoples blogs down. There are also people who like to work with only self-hosted websites. However, both these instances are these are few and far between.

In conclusion, it is only you who decide which platform is right for you. If you are looking for a free platform then I always suggest blogger. However, if your budget allows it then wordpress.org is most definitely the best choice and one I don’t think you will regret.

No matter which one you do decide to go with, make sure you are taking regular backups just in case the worse does happen.
