Now many of us are working from home, it can really increase your productivity and quality of work if you have a dedicated workspace. Working in a clean, tidy and fresh room makes working that bit easier, and we’re here to help give you ideas on how you can make your home office a pleasant and more productive place to be.
Décor
While you can really go to town with style in rooms such as the kitchen and living room, the office is usually a place that is a little more toned down. While bright and engaging colours look fantastic in other rooms, they can be a little distracting when you’re trying to work. Most people use minimalistic décor to avoid distractions and too much stimulation, preferring a fresh and neutral décor. However, a busier room can help inspire you, so it all depends on the nature of your work, you could perhaps look into Gravit Art and choose some wonderful art prints. If you have a job that requires a lot of papers and books, then we’d avoid as much clutter as possible especially on your desk. Soft, calm colours will give you a blank canvas to inspire and encourage concentration.
Be Clever with Room Choice
Often the unused bedroom or backroom is used as the office, mainly because we haven’t got a better idea and offices don’t tend to get first priority. However, it’s very important to give yourself the ideal conditions to help you concentrate. A place where distractions are minimal and away from the noise and interruptions of the rest of the house. For example, we would say a big no to the kitchen or living room for reasons we’re sure you’re aware of! Try avoiding a room that’s too big as well, as they often get used as the dumping ground!
Think Careful About Lighting
Natural light is something we all look for when it comes to our workspace. A room with large windows that isn’t shadowed by trees is preferable, as well as blinds so you can block out the harsh sun if you need to. Artificial light is not only less pleasant than natural, but too much of it can damage your eyes! The early nights in winter can make it hard for us to motivate ourselves, so a good lamp is a worthwhile purchase in the winter months.
Flooring
Flooring is always an important aspect of any room. The office isn’t somewhere where you’re tied down for the need of a practical flooring. Solid or engineered wood are good choices and will offer that sophisticated neutral look that’s best for the office. Although wood is a luxurious choice, it’s not cheap and a lot of people would prefer to show off this plush material in a room that’s more visible. If you’re looking for an imitation of wood but at a cheaper price, then laminate or Luxury Vinyl Tiles are perfect alternatives. If you have or are looking to get underfloor heating, then LVT, laminate and engineered wood are able to cope with its fluctuating temperatures
Furniture
Of course, while a desk and a comfy office chair are a must, it’s worth looking at other options too. A large spacious desk is paramount for organisation, especially if you have a large computer monitor or lots of papers. A corner desk is a fantastic use of space and gives you extra room with the corner, the perfect place to put a computer screen and therefore reducing eye strain. Perhaps install some shelves to sit above your desk to again save space and so you have all your work in one place. Wall décor is a great route to go down, just because it’s your workspace doesn’t mean it has to be boring and dull!
