These days we do a lot of shopping online, however, there are always people out there trying to take advantage of the fact people shop so freely on the internet.
So the question is how do we keep yourself as safe as possible, while still enjoying the freedom of shopping online?
Only Buy From Legitimate Sources
Google is often your friend when buying online. Have a quick google for reviews of any new outlet you choose to buy from. You will often find this is the quickest way to get to the bottom of how legitimate a website is.
Websites such a Trustpoilet are a great place to look for reviews. As well as reading the reviews, I always look to see how many reviews people have left. You should find there is a mix of new accounts and old ones. If reviews are predominantly from new accounts, I do a bit more research.
Check For Website Security
Only ever buy from websites which are secure.
To do this check for the padlock, this proves a website has a valid and working security certificate. If you click this padlock, it should bring up information on the certificate for you to have a look at.
Always be on the lookout for Pilshing scams where people recreate a website, so it looks legitimate. These can often be picked up by address which don’t look quite right.
Online Security
It is always a good idea to make sure your own online habits are as safe as possible. Always make sure your software and anti-virus are up to date and active.
Passwords should be strong – make sure they are long in length and include a mix of upper case, lower case, number and special characters. Some people use a phrase or sentence to make remembering their password easier.
If you are out and about using public wi-fi it is always worth remembering it isn’t as secure as your wi-fi at home. If you need to buy something outside of the home, you are best off using your data where possible.
Understand How Your Paying
There are many online payment systems, such as HPS WorldWide have the welfare of both consumer and business at heart and always striving to offer the best protection for everyone.
Many companies are now offering two-factor authorisation, this is a double level of security at check out and sees you having to prove your identity by receiving a text, or entering a code from another application.
What Do You Do If Something Goes Wrong?
Your first port of call is always the retailer, in most cases, they will be able to help you get your issue solved with little hassle.
However, should the worst happen then contacting your card issuer is the next step. They may be able to help you claw back your money and not leave you out of pocket.
