One thing about being a small island has meant over time we have been invaded by many different people, we have gone through huge transitions to become the place we are now and without the different cultures and backgrounds that have built us, it would be impossible to think what we may be like.
While some of our ancestors haven’t reached these shores in recent history, very few of us are fully native to this country.
Just thinking of my two families, in my adoptive family, my Gran came over from Ireland in the war, she was a servant to an officer, who owned a large estate in Oxfordshire and from the stories she and other family members told she made a huge impact on the family she worked for, as well as being one of the most amazing women I have ever met. I also have a French aunt, who met my uncle while they were both working abroad, again one of the loveliest people I have met.
While in my birth family, my Great Grandfather was Polish and fell in love with a Scottish woman, who together moved to England.
I find it fascinating looking back at history and seeing how people have moved around the world and as for the present day I have Uncles who live in the USA and New Zealand.
Moving where ever it is to and from contains a whole host of stresses and strains, if you are moving to the UK however don’t let signing up with the NHS be one of them, it is an important thing to do. They are life savers after all and while it might seem daunting the process itself is explained on websites such as this one (CLICK HERE) to make it a much less frightening.
