Blogging has certainly grown in popularity over the years and became much more than a place to write down your thoughts. Today, individuals and businesses use blogs to help spread their messages and connect with others who share a common interest in their niche. Starting a blog is easy but creating a successful blog takes a lot of hard work and patience.
It’s normal for new bloggers to make a mistake or two when first starting out but some mistakes can keep you from achieving success. You can get your blog started off on the right track when you avoid making the same mistakes that many other new bloggers made in the past.
Here are seven beginner mistakes to avoid when starting a new blog:
- Not using images to help create interest in your posts. Images capture the attention of your visitors faster than plain text, so they help to make your posts more interesting.
- Using light colored text on a dark background. This is a huge mistake. Reading online content is already harder on the eyes but when you use a dark background and light text, it’s even worse. It will discourage many visitors from coming back no matter how good your content is.
- Not having your own domain name. People find it hard to take your blogging seriously if you don’t even care enough about your blog to spend a few bucks a year to have your own domain name.
- Cluttering up your home page. A cluttered design is distracting and makes your site look unprofessional. Most visitors will leave your blog rather than try to sift through the clutter to find what they’re searching for.
- Not understanding plagiarism and copyright laws. Before posting content or images on your site, make sure it’s your own creation or give credit where it’s due. Never use anything belonging to someone else without their permission.
- Linking to the word Here or Click Here instead of keywords and phrases. In the past this was acceptable but today, it’s a big mistake that many new bloggers still make.
- Not choosing the right niche. When choosing your niche, look for a topic that you’re passionate about. Trying to create content for topics you find boring, may soon lead to a disinterest in maintaining your blog. You also need to choose a niche that is not already overdone but one that has a large enough audience to ensure you can grow your community.
If you’re serious about blogging and want to build a successful blog with a large audience, take your time starting out and do it right. You may still make a few mistakes along the way but avoiding the big ones listed above will help you achieve your goal a lot faster.
