When we were asked to review a Chef”n Sweet spot ice cream maker, I thought it would be something fun to do with Tilly as she is only 6 and she does like helping in the kitchen. We were asked to review it just at the right time too because the hot weather has just started to grace us with its presence. When the ice cream maker arrived, I was most excited as it said we could make ice cream within minutes. ‘Hmmm’ I thought to myself, ‘We can have some home made ice cream for dessert’. Only we had to freeze the ice cream maker for 24 hours in advance of making the ice cream. You really need an empty draw or a chest freezer to ensure the ice cream maker will go in flat to avoid spillage, we only have a small freezer so it took up a whole drawer. The ice cream maker is heavy and filled with water, this is to help to keep the ice cream maker at a cold enough temperature. The ice cream maker is quite deep and you can freeze enough ice cream for up to 6 people.
It is easy to use, you simply take it from the freezer and pour in you ice cream mixture and pop it back in the freezer. After a few minutes, you need to use one of the tools that are included to stir the ice cream and pop it back in the freezer again. some of the recipes in the little recipe book that you get do take longer than a few minutes to make and then freeze, so if you are making ice cream in a rush, you do need to take this in to consideration. The ice cream maker washed up really well, there was no ice cream stuck to the base of the ice cream maker. Using the special tools included in the set, means that you won’t scratch the ice cream maker and the scoop is quite a good size for a portion of the ice cream.
After we made some chocolate ice cream, it took a long time to freeze because we had to cool it down first in order to freeze. We didn’t eat all of the ice cream because there were only two of us, so we had to leave it in the ice cream maker in the freezer. This mean’t that it froze more and when we wanted more ice cream it was really hard (kind of like how Haagen Daas is, when you first open it). We had to leave it to defrost for a little while before we could eat it.
It is a great thing to have if you are having a party because you have recipes for slushies and margarita’s, that you can add alcohol to. you would be the coolest hostess on the block! You can also make non dairy ice cream in it, so people with milk allergies won’t miss out and when you make ice cream from home, you know exactly what is going in to it, you can fill it with all the goodies that you like.
I thought the idea of this was good, but it did take longer than the ‘minutes’ that it promises, because you need to think ahead and freeze the ice cream make in advance, if it isn’t frozen enough, your ice cream will take forever to freeze. you could always leave the ice cream maker in the freezer all the time but as I said earlier, it can be quite big and bulky in there if you have a small freezer.
