9 Benefits of Detoxing That Will Make You a Believer

You’ve heard about detoxes by now. They’re all the rage. But just in case you haven’t let’s define it. A detox is where you abstain from certain substances, like unhealthy foods, and replace them with something good for you to help heal and repair damage that’s been done. For example: lemon water, or other vegetable juices and even fresh, filtered water.

The reasons detoxing might suit you and benefit you are:

  1. Shrinks Your Stomach – When you replace any meal with a detox you’re going to cause your stomach to shrink which will help you eat less when you go back to eating normal food.
  2. Makes You More Mindful – When you go on a detox it makes you think about how much food you eat that you really don’t need. When you go back to eating you’re going to be more conscience of each bite that goes into your mouth, which may result in your making healthier choices.
  3. Improves Digestion – Most detoxes help improve digestion by cleaning out the gut and helping get rid of bad bacteria then replacing it with good bacteria. If you have any issues with your gut that show up as heart burn, diarrhea, constipation and so forth a detox can do wonders for you.
  4. Promotes Fresher Breath – Depending on which type of detox you use, usually you’ll experience fresher breath. This is unlike many other types of diets you can do such as low carb. The reason is that most detoxes are made with fruit like lemon or veggies like cucumber. They clean out your digestive track and your throat and make your breath fresher.
  5. Gives You More Energy – While if you do a long detox involving just juice you may experience some level of tiredness, if you give it time as the nutrients get into your body you’ll have a lot more energy. The reason is you’re not being weighed down by heavy food, and after you get over the caffeine addiction your natural resources take over.
  6. Balances Your Body’s pH Levels – Our bodies are somewhat alkaline. Your urine controls these levels by dispelling the acid as needed. Believe it or not, but fruit juices, especially citrus in water helps alkaline the body and are not considered acidic. But, milk is acidic.
  7. Improves Mental Clarity – As you go through your detox, ridding your body of all the buildup over time your mental clarity will improve. Removing food that clogs the pours, the veins and causes your mental ability to decline, like refined sugars and fats is always a good thing for your mind.
  8. Boosts Your Immunity – Everyone needs more vitamins and minerals but you don’t really want to have to take a bunch of pills all the time. A detox will help with your immunity because it gives your body a break from digestion. The detox lets it focus on healing instead of digesting.
  9. Gets You Started On a Healthier Path – Finally, a detox will help you get started on a much healthier path. You’ll realize that you have a lot more willpower than you thought, plus your taste buds will love every food you put in your body. If you choose healthier foods, it’s going to love you more.

A detox is somewhat personal in nature. It’s all about what you want to do and how you want to do it. There are many types of detoxes you can choose from including lemon detoxes, juice feasts and more. One of the easiest ones to start with is a lemon detox. Why not give it a try?

  1. Until last week, I’d never even considered a detox, but a friend of mine has just gone through one. On day 2, she was close to reaching for the biscuits and coffee, but now it’s all done (9 days in total), she a new person. It’s unbelievable. She’s got tons of energy, her skin looks great, she has a bounce in her step and isn’t even drinking 5 cups of coffee a day! Your reasons for having a detox are making me seriously consider it. Where do you look for ideas?

  2. It really can be good for you. I totally agree and I tried this before and it was great for my skin. My flat mates used to do detox diets when i was about 19 and they always intrigued me but i didnt do it until much older.

  3. I really want to detox, especially if it helps shrink my stomach, I certainly need that!! My immune system could use a boost too, I seem to be catching everything going at the moment. Some really useful points here, I’m certainly going to research more on detoxing now. 🙂

  5. Mainly I’m a big believer in letting the liver do what the liver does best – detoxing your body and ridding it of toxins, however I do think that giving your gut a break every now and then is super beneficial for healing and repairing.
I think that taking the time-out to consider and treat your body to something which allows your digestion to rest will always repay you with a flatter, happier tum!

  6. My husband has done one but I haven’t. I’m tempted (but can’t while breastfeeding) but haven’t yet. I’m afraid my willpower will drop before the benefits come through. I keep meaning to start the hot water-lemon though!

  9. I’ve never been on a detox, but I’ve seen lots of arguments for and against them. I hate those premade plans you spend loads of money on for tiny juices – I think it’s a total rip off! If I was to do a detox, I’d prep it all myself.

  11. If I’m honest I’ve never done a detox, it not to say my body wouldn’t benefit from it lol as it definitely would. It just one of those things that I’ve never been too sure on how to do it, so chose to not to do it. Might have to look into it a bit more thou and try it xx

Detoxing is great in small measured doses! I prefer trying to be a bit healthier all the time instead as I don’t have the will power for a full detox x

  19. I think detoxing is such an overused word! There are some really good ways to detox, like naturally adding more veggies and cutting out sugar. that link you posted for the lemon detox is quite bad for you- canyene pepper, lemon and maple syrup will just give your body a massive sugar hit! just a heads up!

  22. I do love a good detox. I always feel great whilst doing it, bar the first day or two when I suffer caffeine withdrawal symptoms. But when I return to how I was before I feel awful. Maybe I should stop returning to old habits and remember these benefits!
